Following the success of its education-focused mini PC introduced in April, HP today expanded the HP Mini family with three models of a new HP Mini 1000 line.

This array of minis – one of the widest offerings in the industry – addresses the needs of Internet-centric consumers, mobile professionals, always-on social media enthusiasts and fashion-forward women.

“Staying connected to your world – however you define it – is increasingly important to people on the go,” said Ted Clark, senior vice president and general manager, Notebook Global Business Unit, Personal Systems Group, HP. “That’s why HP is excited to address this new high-growth market with a portfolio of head-turning mini companion PCs that are fun and easy to use.”

These companion PCs provide a simplified Internet experience in a sleek, ultra-portable design. Each is less than 1-inch thick, weighs a little more than 2 pounds(1) and has a keyboard that is 92 percent the size of a standard notebook PC keyboard. All come with a BrightView widescreen Infinity display (1,024 x 600 resolution) with flush glass and LED backlight, built-in webcam and microphone.

Powered by Intel® Atom N270 1.6-gigahertz (GHz) processors,(2) HP Minis will be made available worldwide in an array of configure-to-order options.

Mini PCs are geared toward information “snacking” and content enjoyment, versus the rich content-creation capabilities found in fully functional notebook PCs. They are a complement to HP’s award-winning families of notebook and desktop PCs.

The three models are as follows:

The HP Mini 1000 features a piano-black finish with HP Imprint swirl design is pre-installed with Windows® XP Home, making access to the web,(3) critical files and PC applications easily portable. It includes an Ethernet jack, two USB ports, and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® wireless capabilities.(3) Versions with 3G capabilities(3) are expected to be available in December.

Configuration choices include screen size – 8.9-inch or 10.2-inch diagonal BrightView display – and solid-state or mechanical hard-drive options.

The HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition comes in vibrant red with a peony-flower inspired design that reflects the globally acclaimed fashion designer’s Spring 2009 collection. It seeks to satisfy the highly mobile, Internet-centric fashionista and features a 10.2-inch diagonal BrightView display.

Its design was first unveiled on the runway of Tam’s Spring 2009 Fashion Week show in Bryant Park in New York, although many on the scene mistook it for a purse rather than the companion PC that it is. Tam labeled it the world’s first “digital clutch.”

The Vivienne Tam Edition companion PC runs Windows XP Home, making the web,(3) critical files and PC applications easily portable. It includes an Ethernet jack, two USB ports, and Wi-Fi(4) and Bluetooth wireless capabilities. Versions with 3G capabilities(3) are expected to be available in December.

The HP Mini 1000 with MIE (Mobile Internet Experience) is a uniquely simple, mobile Internet companion.(3) An HP-developed interface makes it easy to enjoy digital content – videos, photos, music and email – on demand and on the go. MIE comes loaded with instant messaging, email and Skype for online video chat, making it easy to enjoy social-media experiences anywhere consumers are connected.

Applications enabling browsing, email and online video are pre-loaded and run from the MIE dashboard, minimizing startup time. Favorite websites that are added to the dashboard stay live, and the taskbar makes it easy to switch between programs.

The HP Mini 1000 with MIE runs the Linux operating system. It includes an Ethernet jack, two USB ports, and Wi-Fi(4) and Bluetooth wireless capabilities.

Mini accessories and service

The HP Mini Mobile Drive gives HP Mini 1000 customers 2, 4 or 8 gigabytes of additional storage, making it simple to transport and retrieve important files, photos, music and other data. It sits flush against the HP Mini, maintaining the sleek design.

An optional six-cell lithium-polymer battery is planned to be available in January.

The HP Mini 1000 and HP Mini 1000 Vivienne Tam Edition come with a free six-month subscription to HP Upline for up to three computers. HP Upline is an easy-to-use, secure online service for the storage, backup, sharing and synchronization of digital content.

Pricing(5) and availability

The HP Mini 1000 is available today in the United States at www.hpdirect.com with a starting price of $399.

TOKYO–Toshiba Corporation, the pioneer in small form factor hard disk drives (HDDs), today announced a new half-terabit HDD, the flagship model in a series of 5,400 RPM Serial-ATA (SATA) 3.0 Gb/s 2.5-inch HDDs offering enhanced features that will improve the user experience in mobile applications and other digital devices.

Available in capacities from 500GB to 120GB, the new series of quiet and durable drives is targeted for integration into notebook PCs, sub-notebooks, small form factor and energy star PCs, game consoles, external storage devices and consumer electronics products.

This new family raises the bar in acoustic performance for mainstream high-capacity HDDs. Advanced servo techniques combined with mechanical design changes minimize noise emanating from the drives, making them very quiet during operation . A further plus is that power consumption during data seek and read/write operation has been reduced by 0.5W, compared to Toshiba’s current top-of-the-line 400GB HDD, to 1.7W and 1.4W, respectively.

In addition, optimization of mechanics and servo design boosts the durability of the series, to realize operating shock tolerances matching the highest levels available on the market today(1) .To further protect user data against potentially hazardous external events, free-fall sensor (FFS) options are available in all models in the new series .

Toshiba’s new drive series will begin shipping in production volumes to OEMs and distributors in December 2008 and will be exhibited at CES 2009 in January.

Toshiba Group, a Corporate Citizen of the Planet Earth, is committed to realizing a better environment. Guided by “Toshiba Group Environmental Vision 2050″ the Group is implementing measures to boost environmental efficiency by 10 times in FY2050, against the benchmark of FY2000. The core target is to reduce projected CO2 emissions by a total equivalent to 117.7 million tons a year by FY2025, through the development and sales of highly efficient power supply equipment and systems, and the manufacture of environmentally conscious home appliances and office equipment. By working to mitigate global warming, make efficient use of resources and control management of chemicals, Toshiba Group creates value for people and promotes lifestyles in harmony with the Earth.

Environmentally conscious products

 (1) Halogen Free Product

The new drives achieve chlorine and bromine concentrations below 900ppm for each substance, and an overall total below 1,500ppm, achieving the standard required for recognition as Toshiba environmentally conscious products (ECP).

 (2) Improved energy consumption efficiency.

Compared to the 400GB model (MK4058GSX), the new 500GB HDD model (MK5055GSX) improves energy consumption efficiency(2) , as defined under the Japanese legal standard, to 0.0012W/GB, a 20% improvement.

 (3) Lower CO2 emissions during the product lifecycle

During their lifecycle, the new drives will release approximately 95g a year(3) less CO2 than their benchmark models.

 (4) RoHS compatible

The new drives comply with the European Union’s RoHS directive(4) for eliminating use of six hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

 (5) The new series meets standards for certification as a standout Toshiba ECP

Toshiba is promoting an “Excellent ECP” program to stimulate creation of high value products offering exceptional environmental friendliness.

Tokyo–Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO: 6502), one of the leading global suppliers of hydro power generating equipment, today announced that its Chinese consolidated subsidiary, Toshiba Hydro Power (Hangzhou) Co., Ltd. (THPC) has completed the first phase of a four-year expansion program: a state-of-the-art generator coil shop at its manufacturing facility in Zhejiang. Under the 170-million yuan (approximately US$25 million) program, which will run to fiscal year 2009, THPC will boost its manufacturing output of hydro power generating equipment to over twice that of fiscal year 2007.

THPC owns and operates casting, welding, assembly and machining, and coil shop, and manufactures hydro power generating equipment. The company has expanded its coil shop to 9,000 m2, and installed advanced equipment for production of world-class electrical components for hydro turbine generators parts, including coils and poles.

The scope of the investment program also covers expansion of the assembly and machining shop and construction of an advanced hydraulic research laboratory equipped with a cutting-edge hydro turbine model test facility. It will be China’s first(1) hydro power R&D facility built by a joint venture.

Since it was established in January 2005, THPC has supplied more than 80 hydro turbines and generators in China, and successfully expanded its business by drawing on Toshiba’s rich expertise in R&D, design and high-quality manufacturing.

“We are pleased to open the new generator coil shop,” said Mr. Yasuharu Igarashi, Corporate Vice President of Toshiba Corporation and President & CEO of Toshiba’s Power Systems Company. “Through world-class technology and production enhancement under the FY2009 investment program, THPC will position Toshiba Group to competitively meet growing demand for hydro power, and to contribute to securing a stable electricity supply in China and, through exports, other Asian countries.”

Hydro Power Generation and Strong Growth in the Chinese Market for the Equipment

Hydro power generation is the world’s most widely used renewable energy source.

Toshiba Corporation today announced the launch of a new line-up of 43nm single-level cell (SLC) NAND flash memory products available in densities ranging from 512Mbits to 64 gigabits (Gb) and in a total of 16 versions. The new range includes three products, 16Gb, 32Gb and 64Gb, which integrate monolithic 16Gb chips fabricated with 43nm generation process technology, the highest density chips available. The new devices will start to come to market in the first quarter of 2009.

SLC chips can read and write large amounts of data at high speed, support a very large number of read and write times, and offer high-level reliability. Toshiba developed the new SLC devices to meet diversifying applications, and its enhanced line-up offers support for mobile phones, flat panel TVs, OA equipment, and servers, all of which require high levels of read and write speeds and reliability.

In recent years, Toshiba Corporation has promoted expansion of the NAND flash memory market by accelerating development of high density multi-level-cell (MLC) chips to be used for high capacity data storage in such markets as memory cards and MP3 players. Production of SLC chips has been limited, and with 56nm and 70nm process technologies. In bringing a wider range of SLC flash memories which suit to store data at an advanced level into its line-up, Toshiba aims to expand its line-up of high-value added products for diverse embedded applications, and will promote mass production through the application of advanced process technology.

Toshiba Corporation today announced its first 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) with a Serial-ATA (SATA) interface for automotive applications, expanding its line of robust and temperature-enhanced storage solutions for in-car navigation and infotainment applications.

The new 80GB HDD (MK8057GSC), Toshiba’s first 2.5-inch hard disk drive (HDD) for automotive applications to offer a SATA interface, complements the company’s existing line of 40GB, 60GB and 80GB capacity Parallel-ATA (PATA) products. Migration to the SATA interface enables automotive system designers to easily integrate the new drive with the latest automotive chip-set design technologies. The SATA storage interface allows automotive designers to reduce signal-line complexity, while supporting faster top-end data transfer rates than PATA-based HDDs.

Toshiba also celebrates a key milestone of shipping more than nine million HDDs for automotive applications, highlighting the strong demand and accelerated adoption of disk-based storage solutions by the automotive industry worldwide. The company commands an 84 percent market share*1 for CY2007 in the automotive HDD segment, according to research firm Techno Systems Research (TSR) Co., Ltd.

Toshiba’s leadership in commercializing automotive HDDs draws from more than 10 years of experience working with leading automotive manufacturers and systems providers to design cost-effective, high-capacity data storage solutions that deliver the extended operating specifications required for the automotive operating environment. Toshiba’s latest model features an operating altitude specification of 5,500 meters and supports an operating temperature range of -30o to 85o Celsius. The new 80GB HDD for automotive applications (MK8057GSC) also can withstand operational shock of 300G, providing a robust and dependable storage solution for automobiles operating through extreme temperatures and terrain.

Mass production of Toshiba’s new 80GB SATA HDD for automotive applications will begin in December 2008.

1. Toshiba’s first 2.5-inch HDD for automotive applications to employ a serial ATA interface
The new 80GB HDD for automotive applications (MK8057GSC) adopts the SATA interface for interfacing with high performance CPU, which boosts high speed data transfer rates (1.5Gbps) beyond those achieved by the parallel ATA interface.

2. Environmentally conscious products
(1) Lower CO2 emissions during the product lifecycle
During their lifecycle, the new drives will lower CO2 emissions by approximately 68g a year.

(2) RoHS compatible
The new drive complies with the European Union’s RoHS directive for eliminating use of six hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

(3) The new series meets standards for certification as a stand-out Toshiba ECP
Toshiba promotes an “Excellent ECP” (environmentally conscious products) program to stimulate creation of high value products offering exceptional environmental friendliness.

Computer manufacturers are recalling 100,000 laptop batteries made by Sony Corp. after 40 incidents of overheating, according to the Japanese electronics giant.

Some users reported smoke or flames. Four of the incidents resulted in minor skin burns while 21 of the cases caused damage to property, Sony said on Friday.

Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba and Dell are involved in the global recall.

Sony said the defect appeared to have been caused by a problem with a production line during October 2004 and June 2005. Its own VAIO notebook computers are not affected by the recall.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said that about 32,000 batteries were being recalled voluntarily in the United States, mostly by Hewlett-Packard.

It said consumers should stop using the recalled products immediately because they can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers.

Toshiba spokeswoman Yuko Sugahara said that about 14,400 of its laptops worldwide would be affected by the recall.

In 2006 Sony was hit by recalls of almost 10 million of its batteries for laptop computers because of fears they could catch fire, burning a deep hole in the Japanese giant’s profits.

Samsung Electronics America, a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Corporation, a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, today announced its highly anticipated entrance in the U.S. notebook market. The product line-up includes notebooks in four different categories—Premium Thin & Light, All Purpose, Business, Desktop Replacement, and the Netbook segment.

“With Samsung’s entry into the U.S. notebook market, we are now able to provide a complete PC computing solution to our customers,” said Christopher Franey, vice president of Marketing and Commercial Sales at Samsung Electronics Information Technology Division. “The introduction of Samsung’s premium notebook offerings to the U.S. market solidifies Samsung as a global technology leader, providing advanced mobile computing designs of the highest reliability and quality.”

The X360 and X460 are 13.3- and 14.1-inch premium ultra thin-and-light notebooks with an MSRP starting at $1,599. The X360 is “lighter than air” weighing in at 2.8 pounds and achieving up to an incredible 10 hours of continuous usage, and both support Samsung’s latest 300nits SuperBright® LED backlit LCD display.

Samsung’s NC10 is a netbook with a 10.2-inch wide SuperBright LCD, enhanced capacity battery and huge 160GB hard drive, carrying an MSRP of $499. The Q310 is a highly portable all-purpose notebook with MSRPs of $1,149 and $1,299, featuring a 13.3-inch wide LCD. The R610, with an MSRP of $1,049, is a desktop replacement that features a 16-inch wide LCD.

Completing Samsung’s entry to the notebook market is the enterprise-focused P460 and P560, which are semi-ruggedized notebooks with an MSRP range of $1,149 to $1,399. All of Samsung’s notebooks will initially be available throughout the traditional IT reseller channel, including distributors Ingram Micro and D&H; direct marketing resellers including CDW, PC Computing, Insight and PC Mall; and at most major online e-tailers, including Amazon.com, NewEgg.com, Buy.com and TigerDirect.com. High-Impact Design, Full-Featured Performance, Premium Products Each notebook (with the exception of the NC10 Netbook) will feature the latest Intel® Centrino® 2 processor technology with Intel® Core™2 Duo Processors, 3 gigabytes of system RAM, 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, 1.3MP webcam, 3x USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit LAN, Bluetooth 2.0 and HDMI output. With these top-end specifications, Samsung’s notebooks are designed and built for the customer seeking the latest technologies integrated into highly mobile platforms. Samsung’s famous Touch of Color design – with its black to red color gradation featured on their HDTVs and desktop monitors – will also be found in the Q and R series notebooks.

Samsung is a global leader in digital convergence technologies, as well as a leader in the design and manufacturing of components for mobile computers, allowing the company to offer more flexibility in the design and functionality of its products. Over 60% of the core components that go into Samsung notebooks are Samsung-branded—from memory to hard drives to the LCD and the batteries. This sets Samsung apart from its competitors, as the company controls every aspect of each notebook, from its chassis design to its hardware and software integration. For example, Samsung notebooks are designed so all power supplies and batteries are interchangeable across the entire notebook line (netbook excepted).

Samsung’s NC10 netbook will be available in white or metallic blue color options. It will feature such high-end specifications as a 160GB hard drive and a 10.2-inch wide1024 x 600 display. It will also come with a full host of I/O ports and 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR and a built-in 1.3 mega-pixel webcam. Most impressive is the 93% full-size keyboard and its standard 5200mAH high capacity 6-cell Lithium Ion battery, providing up to eight hours of use on a full charge. Samsung’s netbook, unlike a notebook, is designed for consumption rather than creation. With that in mind, a focus on usability and data consumption resulted in the decision to include a large hard drive and make sure long battery life was a key component.

The Samsung Q and R series feature the latest Intel Centrino 2 mobile processors, advanced graphics, large hard drives and its unique Touch of Color glossy design at very compelling prices. These models are great full-featured notebooks that look and perform well both desk and portable environments.

Samsung’s X Series highlights a huge emphasis on ultra portability and design without compromising performance. The X360 and X460 have a rugged magnesium alloy chassis and a strength-providing aluminum plate behind the LCD, a “pebble”-style keyboard, and lightweight components that bring new meaning to the phrase “thin-and-light.” Lightest in its class, the X360 at 2.8 pounds and the X460 at just 4.18 pounds combine sleek design with robust and feature-rich facets of mobile computing.

Samsung’s P Series business notebooks have a non-glossy display with an Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) adjusting the display brightness to optimize viewing. It also has a ruggedized chassis and LCD, Trusted Platform Module (TPM) with biometrics-based system security, spill resistant keyboard and hard drive shock protection. In addition, it will include a host of I/O ports, including legacy ports such as PCMCIA(PC Card), RS-232 (9-pin) serial and a 56k modem, which are still important in today’s enterprise market.

As part of Samsung’s promise of premium products, there will be an exclusion of any unnecessary software that most competitors include in their systems. The only trial software that will be included in each Samsung notebook and netbook is Microsoft Office Professional 2007 and McAfee Virus Scan 60-day trials. Each unit will include a full host of Samsung utility software that helps with system recovery and data backup, battery life management, performance boosting, network connectivity and hardware/software system diagnostics software.
