LG Announced 13 million LG QWERTY handsets have been shipped since January 2009

Texting? You’re Probably Using an LG Mobile Phone
LG Electronics MobileComm U.S.A., Inc. (LG Mobile Phones), a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, announced 13 million LG QWERTY handsets have been shipped since January 2009 in the United States, reflecting LG’s leadership in the messaging category.

LG had consumer trends in mind when anticipating the need for an easier and faster way to text message. LG first entered the QWERTY market in 2005 with the introduction of the LG F9100, one of the first handsets in the US that incorporated a full keyboard that made it easier to utilize messaging features. As the texting phenomenon catapulted, so did LG’s QWERTY handset sales. Over the past three years LG has reported an astonishing 115% CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) in the QWERTY category.

“In a recent study by LG it was found that teens in the US send 1.2 million text messages every day,” said Ehtisham Rabbani, vice president of product strategy and marketing for LG Mobile Phones. “Since the introduction of the QWERTY keyboard, LG has changed the way people communicate allowing for texting to be considered as valuable as talking, if not more.”

Another exciting finding was that the strong sales performance of LG QWERTY phones is largely due to the continued popularity of the LG enV family. Of the 13 million QWERTY handsets shipped, almost 50 percent were of the series. It was no surprise that the LG enV family garnered such large returns. As the handsets are perfect example of phones designed to meet consumer demands. Each new generation of the LG enV family was designed and improved based on customer feedback. The family, established in 2005, includes the LG V, LG enV, LG enV 2, LG enV 3 and LG enV Touch.

LG Mobile Phones has a broad range of QWERTY devices – working with nearly every major U.S. carrier – which offer a wide mix of features and form factors, appealing to the novice through the most advanced user. The most recent QWERTY LG devices include the LG Xenon, LG Rumor 2, LG enV 3, LG Lotus and the LG enV Touch.

LG Electronics Posts Highest Third Quarter Earnings in Its History

LG Electronics Posts Highest Third Quarter Earnings in Its History
LG Electronics, Inc. (LG) reported record revenues and operating profits in the third quarter, reflecting the results of the company’s successful growth and competitiveness initiatives during the current global recession.

Sales and Profit
Record sales and operating profits on both a parent and a global basis were reported for the three months ending September 30, 2009. Sales on a global basis (including LG’s overseas subsidiaries) soared 15.7 percent to KRW 13.9 trillion (USD 11.2 billion) year-over-year. Operating profit was up to KRW 850 billion (USD 685 million) resulting in a margin of 6.1 percent, 1.3 percent point higher than the third quarter last year. On a parent basis, the company recorded sales of KRW 7.87 trillion (USD 6.34 billion) and an operating profit of KRW 603 billion (USD 486 million).

The Home Entertainment Company saw third-quarter sales rise by 23.9 percent to KRW 4.93 trillion (USD 3.97 billion), returning a profit of KRW 255 billion (USD 205 million) for a margin of 5.2 percent, 4.4 percent points higher than the previous year, as a result of strong product leadership and rising demand for flat panel TVs amid the peak season. On the whole, profitability increased due to higher sales, structural improvements in the plasma display panel business and generally stable profitability in all six business divisions in the HE Company as a result of its cost competitiveness drive.

The Mobile Communications Company reported KRW 4.65 trillion (USD 3.75 billion) in sales, 21.9 percent higher year-over-year and an operating profit of KRW 390 billion (USD 314 million) with a margin of 8.4 percent. Handset sales accounted for KRW 4.38 trillion (USD 3.53 billion), up 24.8 percent from the same quarter in 2008, and operating profit reached KRW 384 billion (USD 309 million), resulting in a margin of 8.8 percent. Shipments of handsets saw an increase of 37 percent year-over-year and 6 percent quarter-over-quarter to 31.6 million units due to robust growth in emerging and European markets, thanks to products such as Cookie and messaging phones, despite a slight decline in unit sales in North America and Korea. Price erosion, along with increased sales of low-end handsets, resulted in lower profitability compared to the second quarter.

The Home Appliance Company posted an increase of 11.9 percent to KRW 2.52 trillion (USD 2.03 billion) in the third quarter, compared with the same period last year. Recovery of demand in emerging markets contributed to this growth year-over-year on a KRW base (4 percent decline year-over-year on a USD base). The company’s product competitiveness resulted in an operating margin of 6.7 percent, 1.7 percent higher from a year earlier, at KRW 170 billion (USD 137 million). Despite an increase in marketing expenses, higher sales in emerging markets and ongoing cost reduction generated a higher margin year-over-year. In the fourth quarter, market demand for durable goods is expected to pick up in emerging countries such as China and India.

The Air Conditioning Company recorded a 13.4 percent decline in third-quarter sales to KRW 851 billion (USD 686 million) year-over-year due to the global recession, while operating margin resulted in a profit of KRW 14 billion (USD 11 million). Despite the recession, the company sees market demand and sales increasing in Asia, Africa, Central and South America with highly efficient commercial air conditioning products leading the growth. LG also expects market share to grow in Korea and the southern hemisphere led by the world’s most energy-efficient commercial air conditioner (Multi-V Super III), as well as LG’s inverter-embedded room air conditioners and commercial radiators.

The Business Solutions Company announced a 2.6 percent rise in sales year-over-year to KRW 1.21 trillion (USD 973 million) with an operating profit of KRW 25 billion (USD 20 million). Sales revenue rose entering the high season as a result of increased demand, with higher sales and stable prices contributing to greater profitability. Forecasting the fourth quarter, developed markets are expected to see demand grow steadily with emerging markets also experiencing continued growth.

Financial Statement and Non-operating Items on a Parent Basis
LG recorded a recurring profit of KRW 1,027 billion (USD 828 million) and a net profit of KRW 807 billion (USD 650 million), a margin of 10.3 percent or 9.9 percent higher than the previous year. Foreign exchange gain of KRW 71 billion (USD 57 million) and equity method gain of KRW 368 billion (USD 297 million) from overseas subsidiaries and affiliates helped push up net profit. In particular, LG Display, in which LG Electronics owns a 37.9 percent stake, booked an equity method gain of KRW 210 billion (USD 169 million).

2009 4Q Business Direction and Prospects
Entering the peak season for TV, modest sales growth is expected both on a quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year basis. Price erosion in the TV and handset business and an increase in marketing/R&D investment will likely result in lower profitability quarter-over-quarter.

2009 3Q Exchange Rates Explained
For the unaudited consolidated earnings results of the three-month period ending September 30, 2009, amounts in Korean Won (KRW) are translated into US Dollars (USD) at the average rate of the three-month period in each corresponding quarter: KRW 1,241 per USD (2009 Q3), KRW 1,291 per USD (2009 Q2, quarter-over-quarter) and KRW 1,063 per USD (2008 Q3, year-over-year).

A Touchscreen Phone That Has Never Been Simpler To Use

A Touchscreen Phone That Has Never Been Simpler To Use

Electronics (LG), a global leader and technology innovator in consumer electronics, today unveiled the LG GD510, or more simply, “Pop”, the most compact 3-inch full touchscreen phone ever made. The LG GD510 is the handset people who want a simple touchscreen phone have been waiting for.

LG GD510 front

LG has been one of the industry’s leading innovators in touchscreen phones since it launched the world’s first full touchscreen phone, PRADA Phone by LG, in January 2007. Since then, the company has achieved great success in the touchscreen devices market by creating an array of handsets designed to meet different consumer needs. For instance, LG’s Cookie (KP500) is an affordable full touchscreen phone that has already sold more than 7 million units worldwide since its launch earlier this year. With the LG GD510, LG is applying its tried and true strategy to another new model – this time, to a compact full touchscreen handset.

LG’s consumer research showed that a large group of consumers wanted the functionality of a full touchscreen phone without the extra bulk and unnecessary features that resulted in higher prices. According to the research, many users were also put off by the complexity of feature-laden phones but still desired the easier navigation and larger screens of full touchscreen phones. The LG GD510 was designed to include the key features these users craved, without the overhead of features they didn’t use.

LG GD510 rear

“We gave the LG GD510 an optimized feature set which allowed us to concentrate on making the phone more compact and simpler to use,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our high-end phones like the Black Label Series New LG Chocolate (LG BL40) may be getting all the attention but there’s a gap in the market for affordable touchscreen phones that we want to fill. The LG GD510 delivers all the essentials in communication, multimedia and entertainment and comes in a compact form factor as well.”

Fully fluent in multimedia, the LG GD510 plays music and movies in several popular file formats. An easy-to-use browser brings all the best mobile content to the device’s large screen and a 3.0 megapixel camera captures high quality photos and videos for sharing online or sending wirelessly to friends.

LG GD510 side

The spacious 3-inch WQVGA touchscreen extends almost to the edges of the LG GD510 with a narrow 4.8 mm bezel giving the illusion of an uninterrupted sheet of glass. The unit’s sleek design is accented by a single button on the face that functions as the menu, end and cancel keys, depending on the phone’s mode. A slim strip of light around the button shines either green or red to indicate the handset’s function. The LG GD510 is crafted from brushed aluminum which gives it a high-end look and feels solid in the hand even when squeezed.

LG GD510 will be available beginning in mid-October in Europe, followed by other markets. Prices will vary country-to-country and will be announced separately in each individual market.

LG Sets New Standards with BORDERLESS TVs at IFA 2009

LG Sets New Standards with BORDERLESS™ TVs at IFA 2009
LG Electronics (LG), a major player in the global flat panel display and audio-video devices market, will unveil new home entertainment products at the 2009 Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA) that go beyond the traditional boundaries of technology and design. LG’s theme for this year, LIVE BORDERLESS™, will instantly make sense to anyone who sees the company’s BORDERLESS™ TVs, which appear to be a single, uninterrupted sheet of glass. These are the first TVs to completely eliminate the seam between the screen and the surrounding bezel.

lg lcd tv

“We want LG to be the top name in home entertainment. To make that happen we’ve listened closely to our customers and invested heavily in product development,” said Simon Kang, CEO and President of LG Home Entertainment Company. “The BORDERLESS™ TVs we’re introducing at IFA 2009 show exactly what we’ve accomplished, setting new standards in home entertainment. These TVs look better than any others on the market and the viewing experience they provide is second-to-none.”

LG is introducing two BORDERLESS™ TVs, the SL8000 and SL9000, which perfectly blend modern style and technological innovation. Their design represents years of research and development. Both products break the accepted conventions of how TVs are supposed to look, opening up new possibilities for a future with true freedom in TV design.

The BORDERLESS™ SL9000 LED TV delivers picture quality as flawless as its smooth surface. Its LED backlight makes possible a dynamic fine contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1. Other features include Bluetooth and HD DivX compatibility. Beneath the SL8000’s beautiful exterior hides a top-end Full HD 1080p SuperIPS panel, which can be finely tuned using LG’s Expert Mode. TruMotion 200Hz ensures that fast onscreen action is always super sharp and a dynamic fine contrast ratio of 150,000:1 gives the TV amazing clarity. LG’s exclusive Intelligent Sensor reduces energy consumption, helping make both TVs friendlier to the environment.

LG was able to create these super-slim smooth TVs by using a new Injection Compression Molding technique, which creates a sleek, uninterrupted glasslike surface. Special laminate films reduce glare and improve picture quality. Upgrades to the invisible speaker system enabled LG to make powerful sound an integral part of its BORDERLESS™ TVs while retaining their slim profiles and seamless finishes.

In addition to its new LCD TVs, LG’s home entertainment highlights at its stand in Hall 11.2 will include innovative and stylish plasma TVs, home theater systems, video devices, data storage devices and projectors. LG will also debut several new smart technologies built into its products. Details will be announced at the company’s press conference at 15:00 on September 3, the official opening day of IFA 2009.

In order to enable audiences around the world to have a say in LG’s newest offerings, the company is sponsoring a forum with top European tech bloggers. LG will further extend its online reach by fully utilizing social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter. And German artist Edgar Mueller will create 3D works of art related to the LIVE BORDERLESS™ theme at Berlin’s Hauptbahnhof (Central Station).

IFA is being held in Berlin, Germany from September 4 through 9. It is one of the world’s largest consumer electronics tradeshows, last year attracting 1,212 brands and approximately 222,780 visitors.

LG Electronics have unveiled two new ultra-slim “full LED” LCD TVs in Seoul. The new 55-inch screens- models 55LH95 and 55LH93 respectively – lead the market in terms of picture quality, design and convenience.

“These products were designed specifically to target the high-end segment and offer unmatched quality and design,” said LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company President and CEO, Simon Kang. “These new models will change the LED LCD TV market landscape and we expect these devices to reinforce the premium image of LCD TVs in general,” said LG Electronics Home Entertainment Company President and CEO, Simon Kang.

LG’s ambitious new product line offers a brighter and clearer screen than competing products thanks to backlighting that employs a total of 3,360 LEDs –- seven times more than existing edge-lit LED TVs. LG’s full LED LCD models also features a 5,000,000:1 contrast ratio through enhanced dimming technology that divides the screen into 240 blocks. And with a refresh rate of 240 Hz, these TVs maintain a vibrant, smooth image even during fast-paced action scenes.

LG’s newest ultra-slim full LED LCD TVs employ patented technology that helps keep the overall chassis thickness down to just 24.8mm. This proprietary technology allows the LEDs to be spread-out horizontally and minimizes the distance between the LEDs and the screen. Another innovation offered for the first time in the new LED LCD TV is the enhanced wireless feature which eliminates the need for image compression. Content can be sent from DVD players, game consoles or home-theater units wirelessly without any degradation.

Price and availability
LG’s ultra-slim full LED LCD TV is priced at around KRW 7 million (approximately US$ 5,500) for the 55LH93 and around KRW 7.6 million (approximately US$ 5,900) for the 55LH95 model which will be launched in July 2009.

LG plans to aggressively expand the LED LCD TV business and is aiming for three to four million unit sales next year. Three different models of full LED LCD TVs will be offered to suit different market segments. The ultra-slim model will be positioned as the premium product with additional products in this category being announced later this year. The company will unveil less expensive 42-inch and 47-inch full LED LCD TVs by the end of the year without the ultra-slim feature.

LG is forecasting that the global LED LCD TV market will grow to 30 million units by next year and to 68 million by 2011, up from 3.1 million this year. LG is aiming to become the world’s second biggest seller of LCD TVs and predicts that the proportion of LCD TVs that feature LED technology will also grow from 2.6 percent this year to 20 percent next year and to 40 percent by 2011.

Viewty Smart (LG-GC900)

Viewty Smart carries on the heritage of the first LG Viewty, which sold over 6.5 million units. The second incarnation of Viewty offers even greater enjoyment while viewing and sharing, in addition to taking still and moving pictures, with a number of upgraded features in addition to its Intelligent Shot Mode. These include an 8 megapixel sensor with sensitivity up to ISO 1600, a higher resolution WVGA touchscreen, a more intelligent image processor and LG’s easy-to-use S-Class User Interface (UI).

“Viewty is back and better than ever, with new smart camera applications that take care of all the complicated camera adjustments and processing for you,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Viewty Smart represents the next generation of LG camera phones, and will drive LG leadership in the industry with its innovative, smart technology.”

Intelligent Shot Mode and Advanced Camera Features
LG conducted consumer preference surveys in fourteen countries including the U.S., U.K., France, Brazil, Russia, India and China to learn what consumers wanted to see in the next generation mobile device and one key finding was that users thought current camera phones were too complicated to operate.

LG’s engineers addressed this issue in the Viewty Smart with Intelligent Shot Mode, which analyzes the subject, background, and lighting conditions and compares the data against seven pre-programmed scenarios to take perfect pictures every time. This feature, still rare on high-end stand alone compact digital cameras, is a first for a camera phones and only available from LG. This hassle-free mode completely eliminates the need to check settings before taking a photo. It even provides instantaneous feedback, showing exactly how the camera is analyzing a particular scene with real-time indicator bars.

With 8 megapixels of resolution, Viewty Smart’s pictures are not just great for sharing online, but are even sharp enough for printing and framing. With a maximum ISO setting of 1600, shots previously considered too dim or dark can now be captured even without a flash. This can be further augmented with the phone’s LED flash. Viewty Smart adds several new camera features including Multi-Face Detection and DVD-quality D1 video recording. It also carries over features such as Touch Shot, Art Shot, Beauty Shot, Panorama Shot and Continuous Shot.

S-Class User Interface Enhanced for Camera Features
Viewty Smart also includes the easy-to-use 3D S-Class UI, which debuted on LG’s ARENA earlier this year. LG has tailored S-Class around Viewty Smart’s camera features with an on-screen dial for instantly switching shot modes and a thumbnail viewer that shows recently taken photos without having to switch to the photo gallery. LG even included an easier way to zoom in and out: Simply move your finger in a clockwise circle on the touchscreen to zoom in, as if turning the zoom ring on an SLR camera. Zoom out by moving the finger in the opposite direction. Zooming in and out is also possible with multi-touch pinching and stretching.

Viewty Smart is as good at sharing photos as it is at taking them. Its wide, sharp 3-inch WVGA screen provides full 800 x 480 resolution, great for seeing every detail in pictures and movies. With 7.2 Mbps HSDPA network and Wi-Fi compatibility, Viewty Smart can upload photos over the internet at broadband speeds. With A-GPS based geotagging, friends can even see the exact spot where a photo was taken. The Viewty Smart can also store photos on its 1.5 GB of internal memory or on MicroSD cards up to 32 GB.

Extremely pocketable, Viewty Smart is just 12.4 mm deep, making it the slimmest 8 megapixel camera phone available. However, with its svelt camera-like design, few people will want to keep this phone hidden from view.

“With Viewty we completely changed the way people looked at camera phones. For the first time, people didn’t have to put up with poor image quality for the convenience of using the cameras on their mobile phones,” said Dr. Ahn. “With Viewty Smart we’ll change perceptions again. It won’t be about having a camera phone that equals the quality of a standalone digital camera. It will be about having a smart camera phone that takes better pictures and is easier to use than a standalone digital camera.”

LG Viewty Smart will be available through operators in Europe starting this May and then launch in other markets around the world.
